Inspiration: Parisian decor

Inspiration: Parisian decor

There is a lot to be said for contemporary Parisian interior style. When one thinks of Paris, there is often the tendency to imagine very traditional Napoleonic décor – lots of gold, tassled curtains, grandeur and elegance. However, there is a new school of thought in Parisian interior design.

Many Parisians are choosing to leave the city centre and move to the suburbs – suburb is a dirty word in Paris. Due to ridiculously high rental prices in central Paris, you can simply get much more for your money outside the periphery. Above you see a completely converted loft space in suburban Paris . As you can see it is most definitely out with the old and in with the new, sexier interior style.

Item of the week

Item of the week

I have decided to introduce a new feature to my design blog: Item of the week. It basically does what it says on the tin – each week I will post an item which I think is a great interior design product.

This week: Simple Shelf Frames by Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad

Simple shelves - uncluttered and stylish. Source: http://remodelista.com

Much like a simple picture frame, they use the wall as their supportive storage point. Whether its books, plants or any other decorative embellisments you wish to put on these shelves, it will look fantastic!

Contemporary Art and Prints

Contemporary Art and Prints

Granada by Butterfly Cool - Source:deviantart.net

There are so many beautiful, striking and insightful images being produced by artists in the world around us everyday and yet, it is so common to enter someones home and see the same generic and often meaningless images that you have seen a millions times before. This seems like such a complete waste of beauty and talent.

For this reason, I would recommend having a look at what is on offer in terms of prints, canvas images and paintings. If you have a look at the small collection of prints I have linked to on this page, you will realise the sheer range out there that we are all missing out on – mainly because we are too lazy to buy anything that isn’t easily transported to us by IKEA.

Bright red or just bright

Bright red or just bright

People need changes in their lives. That’s what my friend said when she called me the other day trying to get an advice from me. She had decided to paint the bedroom walls and was stuck when it came to choosing a colour for her walls. She desperately needed my help. Though I have a really good visual memory I told her I need to take a look at her bedroom again to be able to give an opinion.
So I went over for what she said was a painting emergency. Her choices were either a bright red or something just bright.

At first bright red for the bedroom seemed like a bad idea but her bedroom was big enough to allow one or two red walls, without appearing too small afterwards.
But that was just one aspect. Furniture had to be taken into consideration as well. The big white bed in the middle and the nightstands would have been complemented by the bright red. But what about the wooden floors. The dark brown and bright red combination proved to be too much for a relaxing bedroom atmosphere. We eliminated the bright red and went on to our next option.

Our next choice was a bright beige that would bring into the bedroom a nice beamful and relaxing atmosphere. It went just fine with the dark brown floor and wasn’t too pale for the white furniture either. Normally I wouldn’t recommend too many light colours in a room but the beige had a touch of orange and yellow . Just the perfect amount. It looked wonderful combined with the wooden floors and the white vintage furniture. Something had to be done about the light pink curtains but once the decision had been made my friend was happy to take care of the details by herself.
Mission accomplished!

Wardrobes and dressers/dresses

Wardrobes and dressers/dresses

One new project on my hands, a lot of enthusiasm and loads of new ideas that I can’t wait to develope. My new project is probably of great interest for all you ladies out there. It’s putting together my own personal dressing room. After months of planning and imagining how it would look like, I have decided to start early on a Monday morning.
Luckily my bedroom already had a small dressing room attached so I didn’t need to build extra walls. I did need to put holes in the walls and install some shelves and some drawers. Yes that’s right I have drawers coming out of the wall. I thought I might use the cut-out in my wall and save some space. So I have placed in there, some vintage white drawers for accessories and other small things. Adding in 3 freestanding wardrobes was enough to fit all my wardrobe. I categorized everything according to colour . This proved to be not only a very practical solution but aesthetically pleasing as well.
I was very happy with the result so far but since the initial idea was to transform my dressing room into more than just a place to hang my clothes, I’ve decided to add a few details.
On one of the empty walls left I hanged 3 mirrors. In one of the corners, I placed a small coffee tables, to store all my fashion magazines and an ottoman. Right by the entrance I decided to have a “designer’s corner” and exhibit all of my favourite designer dresses.
The last touch I had to add was lighting. I needed a lot of light at any time of the day. And so I bought 4 big tall lamps and posted each in one corner.
Project done in 2 days. More than a dressing room, I now have my own little haven, where I can skim through my magazines and sip my coffee.

The writing on my wall

The writing on my wall

My friend is a contemporary artist and he has been begging me to let him ‘exhibit ’ his work in my home, for ages. Not that I am not an art lover but I was just fearing that once I hang one of his paintings on my wall, I won’t be able to take it down without having to answer an endless series of questions.
I didn’t fear for a second that I won’t be able to take it off period.
I decided to accept his proposal, when I noticed the big empty wall behind the couch. When I was decorating my living room I had only one thought in mind: keep it as simple as you can. I wanted to add colours and details using small porcelain objects or other decorations. That is why I needed my furniture to be rather dull. So I went for the black leather couch and a grey rug underneath it. After the “burden ” of choosing the furniture was lifted off my shoulders I decided to relax. And so I have been relaxed for months now, without taking the time to choose the accessories. Once I have decided I’ll start concentrating on that, I immediately called my friend and asked him if the offer was still standing. Not only that the offer was still standing but the next morning he was also standing at my door, with a bunch of brushes and jars of paint in his hand. Needless to say he was more than excited to do it. That was only the intro of what he had in store for me. Apparently he wasn’t just gonna bring one of his canvases for my wall, he was gonna turn my wall into a canvas.
Decided to have the courage not to stop an artist from creating.
As I am writing this, in my living room, above my couch I can admire, written in red big letters the following:
ceci n’est pas une écriture sur le mur

My coffee story

My coffee story

I love coffee. So much that I have to write about it on my interior design blog you might ask? Well, for coffee lovers there is of course the matter of where you have your coffee every morning.
Some prefer the kitchen table and breakfast with the family. Some just take their cup with them in front of the computer, and sip it while checking the e-mails. But if you love coffee as much as I do, you are going to want to take your time when drinking it and have the perfect place for that.
Coffee tables have become less and less popular lately. But there are still some nostalgic souls that haven’t given them up. For these people coffee is so important that it needs a special place of its own and special company. I one, always invite my neighbours over for coffee. For nothing goes better with coffee than a pleasant conversation.
Last week I also decided to put more time and effort into creating a perfect little corner in my living room for the morning coffee conversations. Choosing the place was not hard because I knew exactly what I wanted. There is nothing like watching the sunrise in the morning over a cup of coffee. So I have decided to have my perfect corner by the living room window. A lot of light, nice and warm, perfect.
Going through some furniture stores I have seen some wonderful solutions. The coffee table is of course a must but the seats are just as essential. After days and days of looking around and picturing a perfect décor, I narrowed it down to either large bean bags, a bench or some ottomans. Tough choice. In the end I decided to complement my coffee table with a nice vintage bench, just like my grandmother’s. Added some nice coloured cushions and some blankets and it was done. My morning coffee haven!

Christmas Decorations Already!

Christmas Decorations Already!

Source: www.housevira.com

Inspired by the window shop I pass by every morning I have decided my opening article to be about Christmas decoration and how innovative they can be.
I know I might have went a bit too much ahead thinking about this 2 months before the actual holiday but I just got really excited at all the wonderful ideas I might discover. And so I started surfing the internet and ohh..what an adventure that was.
After a long research and some brainstorming I have come up with two solutions for those of your who love a bright home: Christmas lamps!
During the winter holidays my home goes through a lot of transformations. I try to change the whole atmosphere and invest a lot of time in doing that. I would just find it really dull to spend this season in the same décor as I spend the other three. So I’m always trying something different for a change. This year I have decided to change the lighting in my home. Surfing a bit through some pages I found these amazing lamps that would look so perfect next to my Christmas tree. It is true you can only manage to complement a modern interior with these Christmas lamps.

If you still haven’t given up the classical furniture style and want something that reminds you of your grandmother’s cottage, then here are some suggestions for you. You can design your own lamps. All you need is some candles, a couple of big bottles or jars (just make sure the candles fit inside) and some ideas, together with of course a lot of patience and scrupulosity. Once you have all this you can get as creative as you want. You can either paint the jars or bottles and create great lighting effects or crochet some bows, to decorate them, wrap them in wreaths it’s all up to your imagination now.

I hope this inspired you…or if inspiring is too big of a word at least gave you some ideas to start from. I do believe people can be creative in so many ways!
